Shaking Pyramid

If you are a fan of psychedelic rock, shredding, skills and good rock music in general, you are more than likely to enjoy videos of a band called (Shaking) Pyramid. Crews from Eagles Nest Productions went to Casbah San Diego to film and record  this new band of Mike Eginton (bass) from Earthless, Zack Oakley (guitar and vocal) from JOY and Space Nature, and Paul Marrone (drum) from Psicomagia.

Monday after SXSW

About 10days ago, SXSW was over and boys and girls returned home from Austin.

約１０日前、サウス・バイ・サウスウェストは終了し、少年少女はオースティンから帰ってきました。

Some of my friends from San Diego did an almost-whole day drive to Texas to join the festival.

私のサンディエゴの友達の何人かも、フェスティバルに参加するために、ほぼ丸１日の運転をしてテキサスへ向かいました。

Before leaving for Austin, Dave Mead (a drummer from Cuckoo Chaos) coined a beautiful analogy, “Austin during South By Southwest is like North Pole during Christmas.”

「SXSW中のオースティンは、クリスマスのノースポールのようなものだ」と 、オースティンに出発する前に、Cuckoo Chaosのドラマーのデイブ・ミードは美しい例示をしました。

But I didn’t go. However, I went to a show at Tin Can Ale House right here in San Diego on Monday after SXSW.

だけど、私は行きませんでした。が、しかしながら、SXSWの翌日の月曜日、ここサンディエゴでTin Can Ale Houseでのライブに行きました。

A show at one venue doesn’t make you feel overwhelmed by quantities, or make you forget which bands you saw, or makes you pass out with free alcohol all day and such as I imagine SXSW probably does to many attendees.  But this show at Tin Can was very satisfying and almost made me glad that I didn’t do 22 hour drive into one of the most awsome musical chaos.

一つのベニューでのショーは、おそらくSXSWが多くのフェス出席者にするように、バンドの数であなたを圧倒したり、どのバンドを観たかすっかり忘れさせたり、１日中フリーのアルコールであなたをノックアウトするようなことはしません。だけど、このティンキャンでのショーはとても満足のいくもので、最も素晴らしい音楽的カオスの中に２２時間のドライブを経て行かなくてよかったとさえ思いそうになりました。

I filmed all the bands played at Tin Can and made a 10 minutes video.

When Radio Sucks

Radio almost never plays local music, for some reasons they keep playing cutting edge rock music hits from 20 years ago over and over.

どういうわけか、ラジオは２０年前に最先端だったロック・ミュージックばかり流し、ローカル・ミュージックをほぼ流しません。

I don’t know how radio people think, but at least one of the stations should reflect more of what’s going on currently and locally. Everyone knows Nirvana, we all have heard their music and they were great.

ラジオ局の人達がどういう風に考えるのかはわかりませんが、少なくとも１つのラジオ局がローカルで何が起きているのかを繁栄するべきです。誰でもニルバーナは知っているし、彼らの音楽がいいことも知っています。

I like listening old school tunes from radio, but it doesn’t really make sense to me that radio collectively ignores the current local musicians who are currently writing music, playing local shows and touring outside the town. What I know is big portion of Radio company’s revenue comes from advertisement. Maybe they are playing safe to keep their advertisers? They are afraid that listener is going to change the station if they play something too unfamiliar? They don’t care about local culture? I don’t know.

古い音楽をラジオで聴くのも好きですが、ラジオ局が集合的に、現在音楽を作り、ローカルのベニューでライブをし、街の外でツアーをしている現在進行形のローカル・ミュージシャン達を無視するのはおかしいと思う。私の知っている事実はラジオ局の収入は宣伝広告からくるものが大きいということです。ラジオは収入源であるアドバタイザー達をキープする為に安全に安全にやっているんでしょうか？無名の音楽を流すことによるリスナー離れを恐れているんでしょうか？それとも彼らはローカル・カルチャーのことは頭にないのでしょうか？私にはわかりません。

But especially after appearance of myspace music, bandcamp, and other internet places that you can discover new music on your own, discovering new artists has become a new cool and fun thing to do. And I believe many of us are doing that and ditching mainstream music. Many people have tastes for new things and know how to listen and think about music.

だけど、特にマイスペースやバンドキャンプや他のインターネット上の場所で新しい音楽をユーザーが独自に探せるようになってから、新しいアーティストを見つけることは新しいクールで楽しいこととなりました。そのようにしてたくさんの人々が、主流の音楽を聞かなくなっていると思います。たくさんの人達は新しい音楽へのテイストがあり、音楽の聞き方、考え方を持っています。

Anyway, this podcast saved me from Radio Attack when I was working on stuff at a cafe the other day. It’s all San Diego local music.

Art Show at Cell Space/ A Mohair Jacket from the Past

I was in San Francisco with my friend Ayari in the last week of February and the first 2 days of March.

２月の最後の週と、３月の最初の２日間、私は友達のあやりちゃんとサンフランシスコにいました。

I spent lots of time walking around, drawing, painting and partying, and I stayed at my friend Krystal’s place in Mission District.

たくさん歩き、絵を描き、ペイントし、パーティーをし、ミッション・ディストリクトにある友達のクリスタルの家に滞在しました。

One of the highlights of the trip was an art show at Cell Space.

旅のハイライトの１つはセル・スペースでのアート・ショーでした。

Ayari and I were looking for a gallery or shop to put our paintings in the city, but being a part of a group show was even better and funner.

あやりちゃんと私は街でアートを置けるギャラリーかお店を探していましたが、グループ・ショーに参加することはそれりも楽しくいいものでした。

Thanks for your help Tom and Krystal. That became one of my favorite places and time in San Francisco.

トムとクリスタルに感謝。それはサンフランシスコでの一番好きな時間と場所になりました。

We Are Artists

In the mean time, I travel quite a bit and had developed a habit that I buy one thing that I really like in the destination.

話は変わって、私はかなり旅行をするので、旅行先でとても気に入ったものを１つ買う習慣があります。

This time I bought a set of a vintage jacket and skirt from LA ROSA in Haight area.

今回はヘイト・エリアにあるラ・ロサというお店で、ビンテージのジャケットとスカートのセットを買いました。

People at the store seemed to be proud of clothes they have there, and clothes were in good condition. And the massive collection of vintage clothes from the past were creating some sort of symbolic atmosphere that you wouldn’t feel at H&M or Urban Outfitter.

お店の人達はお店にある服達をとても誇りに思っているようで、洋服はとてもいいコンディションでした。巨大な過去からのビンテージの洋服のコレクションは、H&M や Urban Outfitter　では感じることのない、ある種の象徴的な雰囲気を作り出していました。

I don’t regularly buy vintage clothes. But I felt like buying, wearing, feeling, looking at vintage clothes is one of the ways to feel the past.

私は普段はビンテージの洋服はあまり買いません。だけど、ビンテージの洋服を買ったり、着たり、感じたり、見たりすることは、過去を感じる１つの方法なんだと感じました。

I had a good time, thanks San Francisco.

楽しかった、ありがとうサンフランシスコ。

St. Patrick’s Day and New Projects

(1) I woke up in the morning on St. Patrick’s Day with a news that my roommate Fernando broke a sink in the bathroom and left for work.

(1) 聖パトリックの日の朝、ルームメイトのフェルナンドがバスルームの流しを壊して間もなく仕事へ行ったというニュースと共に目覚めました。

(2) Soon after hearing that news, my friend Sean dressed up in green with a green silk hat on top showed up with his lovely girl friend Tashi.

(2) そのニュースを聞いて間もなく、緑に身を包み頭に緑のシルクハットを乗せたショーンが、かわいらしいガールフレンドのタシと一緒にうちに遊びに来ました。

(3) My boyfriend Glen got really pissed, did a research on World Wide Web, called plumbing company. But nobody answered, and the price was quite expensive. So he started breaking down the sink, and the house started smelling like sewage. He ran to the hardware store, purchased right parts and finally fixed the sink. The sink functions perfect now. Glen proved that he is a true D.I.Y. punk rocker, and Sean and Tashi and I sent him a warm applause.

(3) 私のボーイフレンドのグレンはカンカンに起こり、ワールド・ワイド・ウェブでリサーチをし、配管工事会社に電話をかけました。しかし誰も電話に出ず、値段もなかなか高いのでした。なので彼は自ら流し台を分解し始め、家の中に下水の匂いが立ちこめました。彼はハードウェア・ストアへと走り、正しい部品を購入し、ついに流し台を直したのでした。流し台は今は完璧に機能しています。グレンは真のD.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) パンクロッカーであることを証明し、ショーンとタシと私は彼に温かい拍手を送りました。

(4) Then we enjoyed a good St.Patrick’s Day with Jameson and Guinness.

(5) Sean and Glen are playing a show at Tin Can Ale House in San Diego tomorrow, March 19th. It’s Glen’s project called Balloons. It is music that built around gameboy sound. Sean will be playing samples, and Fernando will be taking over the visual during the show.

(5) ショーンとグレンは明日３月１９日にサンディエゴのTin Can Ale Houseでライブパフォーマンスをします。Balloonsというグレンのプロジェクトで、ゲームボーイ・サウンドを中心に組み立てられた音楽です。ショーンはサンプルを、フェルナンドはショーのビジュアルをパフォーマンスします。

(6) While boys are working on musical projects, I am quietly making art. One of my projects I am working on right now is that mixing up my old drawings on beautiful colored paper I recently purchased.

(6) 男の子達がミュージカル・プロジェクトに取り組んでいる間、私は静かにアートを作っています。今私がやっているプロジェクトの１つは私の古い絵を最近買った色紙の上で組み合わせるというものです。

The Art That I Bought & The Art That I Sold Lately

I bought these 2 paintings by my friend Christian Clemensha for my birthday.

自分の誕生日に友達のクリスチャン・クレメンシャから２枚の絵を買いました。

These are the first original art works that I bought. I really like them so I hang them up at the staircase landing where everyone can see them.

この２枚は私が始めた買った原画で、とても気に入っているので２枚並べてみんなが見れるように玄関の踊り場に飾ってあります。

And this seahorses drawing of mine was sold at Make Good in South Park, San Diego.

そしてこの私の絵はメイク・グッドというサンディエゴのサウスパークにあるお店で売れました。

Actually the guy who bought it was my friend from high school back in Japan who was visiting San Diego. He bought this for his mom’s birthday.

実はこの絵を買ってくれたのはサンディエゴに遊びに来ていた日本の高校時代の友達でした。彼は母親の誕生日に絵を買ったんですね。

Hopefully he won’t say, “She will try to sell you art, so be aware when you hang out with her,” or something like that to my friends from high school 😛  But, thanks anyway Joe 🙂 I hope he and his mom enjoy looking at this drawing.

私としては「蜂谷さんと遊ぶと絵売りつけられるよ」とか高校時代の友達に彼が言わないことを願うばかり。

だけどとにかくありがとうジョー君！彼と彼のお母さんが絵を楽しんでくれると幸いです。

Before I’ve heard someone say, “San Diego is an armpit where creativity dies.” But it is simply not true because I have so many friends who are making art and music and such. Creativity live where people create right? I don’t have to live in “YAY” area to be an artist. (No offense to SF) Actually I love San Francisco.

以前に「サンディエゴはクリエイティビティが死滅する脇の下みたいなとこだ」と誰かが言うのを聞いたことがあるけれど、周りでたくさんの友達がアートや音楽を作っているので、それは単純に間違った見方だと思う。創造性は創造する人達がいるところに息づく。「イェイ（ベイ）・エリア」に住んでなくてもアーティストにはなれるよ。（サンフランシスコを馬鹿にしてるわけではなくてね）実際サンフランシスコは大好きです。

Review of an Ear Hole 耳の穴のレビュー

Last year I made a film called A Canvas as a school project.

去年大学で、A Canvas　という題名のフィルムを作りました。

Without telling me, my friend who is in a band called Bruisecaster submitted the part 5 of the film (because part 5 featured Bruisecaster) as a music demo to San Diego Citybeat. And it got reviewed in the local music issue 2012.

私の許可無しにブルーズキャスターというバンドをやっている友達がそのフィルムのパート５（パート５はブルーズキャスターのフューチャリング）をサンディエゴのローカル・ペーパーのシティービートに送りました。そしてそれはローカル・ミュージック号でレビューされました。

“Not sure how I feel about this video-as-demo thing. Kind of artsy? Kind of douchey? A little of both? But if a band can put a CD in a record sleeve and call it a demo, why can’t Bruisecaster shoot a rehearsal and call it a movie? But it’s more than that: Directed by Shoko Hachiya, it’s a live show and a whole bunch of other stuff, too. Twelve minutes in, there’s a close up of someone’s ear hole, and I kept looking at it until it didn’t look like an ear hole anymore. That’s Bruisecaster.”

「このデモとしてのビデオに対してどう感じていいのかはよくわからない。芸術肌っぽい？それとも嫌がらせ？もしくは両方のミックス？だけれどもしバンドがCDをレコードのジャケットに入れてそれをデモと呼べるなら、なぜブルーズキャスターがリハーサルを撮影してそれを映画と呼んではいけないのだろう？しかしそれは単なるリハーサルの撮影記録ではない。蜂谷翔子に監督された『デモ』は、ライブショーや他の様々なものも含んでいる。１２分経過したところで、誰かの耳の穴のクロースアップシーンがある。そして私はそれが耳の穴に見えなくなるまで見つめ続けた。それがブルーズキャスターだ」

I’m not too sure how I feel about this review, but I thought it was hilarious and made me smile.

私はこのレビューについてどう感じていいのかはよくわからないけれど、とても面白いと思ったし、私はこれを読んで微笑んだ。

And I really like the last sentence.

それに最後のセンテンスがとても好きだ。

“I kept looking at it until it didn’t look like an ear hole anymore. That’s Bruisecaster.”

「そして私はそれが耳の穴に見えなくなるまで見つめ続けた。それがブルーズキャスターだ」

Sounds like the last sentence of a paragraph in the novel that I would preferably read.

なんだか私が好んで読みそうな小説の１つのパラグラフの最後のセンテンスみたいだ。
